ISS at Foundry, Furnaces and Castings Expo with RaytekJune 2006: International foundry professionals convene in UK as leading manufacturer teams up with Distributor of the Year
Instrumentation specialist Instrumentation Systems & Services this month appeared at the FFC Expo 2006 at the Harrogate International Centre, alongside Raytek (a Fluke company), the global leader in infrared non-contact temperature measurement.
Held at different venues around the globe every two years, the World Foundry Congress is an established event attracting a large number of senior foundry professionals from around the world. This year the Congress took place in the UK, hosted by the Institute of Cast Metals Engineers, running alongside the Foundry, Furnaces & Castings Expo. The FFC Expo exhibits the latest technological developments and information from the three key sectors of the industry: general foundry equipment, metallurgy plant and castings suppliers.
ISS was a natural exhibition partner for Raytek, having just won Raytek UK Distributor of the Year and possessing knowledge of the Yorkshire area and industries. Both companies reported a good showing at the trade fair, with several promising new leads generated and links cemented with existing clients and users.
Scott Kelly, ISS Sales Manager, said: "It's unusual for an exhibition of this size and focus to arrive on our doorstep, so it was a good opportunity to catch up with clients we haven't seen for a while and talk to new companies who could use infrared thermometry in their production process. Raytek instruments are competitively priced with high-end specification so received a lot of interest at the Expo - hopefully we can capitalise on this and continue to expand into different markets around the UK."
Winning Raytek UK Distributor of the Year six times in the past seven years, ISS has supported Raytek apparatus for the past decade. Does this contradict ISS' claim to be independent?
"Not at all," said Kelly last year, "because the only reason we offer Raytek before other similar manufacturers is that Raytek gear represents the best value for money. We don't get better terms from Raytek than we would from other suppliers, we don't have any vested interest or any personal ties. But what we do have is experience and expertise in infrared thermometry: clients come to us for advice, and based on that expertise and experience we can't help but point them towards the products we know will do a good job for them. Part of being independent is being able to freely say what the best piece of kit is, and it's on that basis we support and recommend Raytek."

New Generation of VMD Controllers Launched from WestFebruary 2006: ISS begins to sell and support another range as leading manufacturer unveils new products
Instrumentation Systems and Services, the UK's premier process control outlet, is to begin the sale and support of the new line of West 'Plus Series' valve motor drive discrete controllers with immediate effect.
The West 6170+ (1/16 DIN), 8170+ (1/8 DIN) and 4170+ (1/4 DIN) will supersede the N series and have new features including: remote setpoint option, Modbus communications, transmitter power supply and open loop valve control with or without position indication. They also offer an improved Plus Series interface and greater field flexibility, as well as incorporating the proven reliability of existing Plus models.
The controllers are used for continuous online open loop control of valve motor drives or electric actuators. This allows for accurate control without the need for slide-wire feedback, lowering the cost of the motor and wiring without sacrificing control. The controllers incorporate the advanced West tuning algorithms, with selectable pretune and self-tuning for easier setup. The self-tune also reduces output activity to an absolute minimum without compromising control quality, thereby reducing wear and tear on mechanical components such as valves, contactors and relays.
In test, these controls have cut down valve oscillation from 30 to 40 times a minute to just a few. Pre-tune plus self-tuning has also been shown to get on control up to 3 times faster.
The West Plug and Play technology allows you the ability to easily add to the controller's features by simply installing additional plug-in boards. Inputs, outputs, alarms and communications are all field upgradeable, meaning users can only pay for the options they need. The controllers are also easy to set up either via PC configuration software or via the front buttons. |

ISS Wins Global Glass Quality ContractJanuary 2006: SCADA position reinforced as instrumentation specialist ensures float glass is top class
Instrumentation Systems & Services, the UK's leading independent outlet of process control equipment, said this month it has won a contract to design and implement a QA-bolstering SCADA system for the world's leading glass manufacturer.
With its successful proposal for the temperature and energy-based system, the position of the independent distributor is confirmed as a leader in UK SCADA design.
Philip Howard, Managing Director of ISS, said: "This was a highly competitive contract and to be awarded the work in preference to larger firms is obviously a delight. Winning the order reflects the fact that we're at the forefront of designing and implementing British SCADA systems.
"Although the project is on a large scale, it's quite typical of an application for us. Essentially, the system involves two infrared linescanners for high precision float glass placed immediately on the exit of vertical toughening furnaces. As the glass exits the furnace, the scanners capture the thermal profile of each side of the glass and report to the Prodigy HMI software. The profile is displayed to the operator to check for inconsistencies and cold-spots, with snapshots automatically taken for subsequent analysis and recording. Then Seneca digital input modules will be used to take the on/off state of the furnace heaters and bring the signals back into the software, where we will calculate energy input so low temperature areas can be correlated with low power areas, and in this way a more consistent tempering process achieved." The system is planned to be operational in the third quarter 2006.
The client is the largest manufacturer of glass and glazing products in the world, with an annual float glass output of 6.4 million tonnes and global sales of £4 billion. Founded in the UK in the early 19th century, the client now has manufacturing operations in 26 countries on five continents, sales in more than 130 countries and 36,000 employees worldwide.

ISS Powers PowerJanuary 2006: Process control expert helps power station with temperature and pressure problems
Market leader Instrumentation Systems & Services this month won an order from one of the largest power stations in the UK to design and build a complex multi-control-panel system.
The client was having trouble monitoring oil temperature and pressure, but ISS was able to use its expertise and experience in the energy sector to design a high specification, cost-effective solution. Each control panel is to incorporate various instrumentation including Status pressure transmitters, Square D pressure switches, custom-built PT100 probes and West 6010 pressure and temperature indicators. Delivery is expected to be in the second quarter 2006.
The coal-fired power station comprises four 500MW units, using 800 tonnes of coal and 218 million litres of water per hour. Since 2003 the power station has also been the market leader in the effective co-firing of renewable fuels (responsible for 80% of all such energy in the UK). The client is a gas, electricity and telecoms company and a constituent of the FTSE 100 index.

ISS Appointed UK Area Distributor for Micro-EpsilonNovember 2005: Another new partnership forged as Micro-Epsilon select market leader as UK distributor
Instrumentation Systems & Services, the Yorkshire-based process control outlet, announced this month it has been appointed area distributor for the North, North East, North West and Midlands West territories for Micro-Epsilon.
Micro-Epsilon is an esteemed German manufacturer of displacement, position and dimension sensors, founded in 1968 and with more than 1000 engineer-years of experience in the development, production and application of industrial sensors and systems.
Regarded as the country's premier distributor of industrial instrumentation, ISS is a popular choice for manufacturers looking to enter the UK market, as Philip Howard, Managing Director of ISS, explained.
"Taking on a new product range is a responsibility that requires serious effort if you're going to do it properly. We refuse to let our customers down by sacrificing expertise for breadth and signing up to every distributor agreement we're offered. However, we want to stay at the top of our game, and our market position and independence allow us to pick and choose those manufacturers that will help keep us there. Micro-Epsilon have strong reputation and make the best products in their market - they were looking to expand from their UK centre, so we were pleased to discuss the prospect of partnership."
Meetings at the Micro-Epsilon UK centre in Liverpool and Global HQ in Ortenburg, Germany, ended happily as ISS is to begin marketing and selling Micro-Epsilon sensors with immediate effect.

ISS Celebrates Million-Pound YearJune 2005: Turnover breaks the million-pound barrier as instrumentation expert goes from strength to strength
Instrumentation Systems & Services this month announces turnover of over £1 million for the first time for the year ending 31 May 2005.
ISS, the UK's leading independent outlet of process control instrumentation, has seen this record rise in a year which also holds a move to 4400 sq. ft. purpose-built offices and another expected UK distributorship appointment.
This turnover reflects the growth in ISS' UK presence, in both its heartland of the Yorkshire and North East areas and further south to the Midlands and beyond. The company is in its 18th year of business and shows no signs of complacency, with plans to relaunch the company website and online shop, push further into southern areas and continue to secure distributorships with new and established manufacturers.
Rosemary Howard, ISS Financial Director, said: "Of course we were overjoyed with the results. This means more to us than sheer profits because it reflects the growth of the company and the value and volume of work undertaken rather than just high prices and high mark-ups. Our two core areas of distribution and project work are both on the rise, and our popularity is a tribute to the hard work the company has put in over the years to deliver a personal service alongside our low prices. The increase in turnover means we're in a stronger-than-ever position when negotiating with manufacturers, so we will be able to keep securing the best deals around, while keeping our feet on the ground and maintaining the personal relationship with our clients that has made us such a successful small company."

ISS Relocates as Business GrowsJune 2005: Market leader upgrades its facilities to reflect rise to prominence in the UK instrumentation industry
Instrumentation Systems & Services has moved to new 4400 sq. ft. purpose-built offices following 17 years' steady growth and its emergence as the independent process control distributor of choice for thousands of companies in the UK and abroad.
With the growth in trade in the Yorkshire and North-East areas and successful and continuing expansion into the North-West and Midlands, ISS needed a new base to accommodate its burgeoning business. The new Wilmot Hall site is the third property ISS has had to acquire, each time outgrowing its current premises as the Yorkshire company goes from strength to strength.
The decision to move offices was taken several years ago, as Philip Howard, Managing Director of ISS explained: "It was inevitable that we would have to get bigger premises as we recruited more staff and expanded our stock room ever further into the sales office! There's always an element of risk involved with such a big capital outlay but we have always been a company to look forward and develop our business as much as possible, and the new premises provide us with room to grow further."

ISS Deployed to Assist British Armed ForcesApril 2005: Temperature and humidity problems solved as MOD call on instrumentation specialist
Process control expert Instrumentation Systems & Services has designed a system for the Ministry of Defence to control temperature and relative humidity inside Chieftain tanks.
The FV 4201 Chieftain was the main battle tank of the United Kingdom during the 1960s and 1970s. It was one of the most advanced tanks of its time, having the most powerful main gun and armour of any tank in the world until the late 1970s. Many of the tanks are now in storage, but the MOD need to ensure they remain in usable condition, as Philip Howard, Managing Director of ISS, explained.
"This project is similar to that we worked on for the US Navy around this time last year, only here the tanks aren't even necessarily decommissioned, they're just in storage - obviously, the MOD don't want them to deteriorate. However, storage conditions are quite variable and problems could remain unchecked for some time: high temperatures would damage the electronics, high humidity can cause rust, and low temperatures lead to condensation which can trigger both."
The control system designed by ISS and one of its system integrators to combat these issues largely comprises a number of air flow velocity sensors, Novus relative humidity and temperature transmitters and ABB 6-, 18- and 24-channel videographic recorders. Delivery is expected to be in the third quarter 2005.
"The project underlines the diversity of our client base and expertise," said Howard. "Every year we amass more experience as companies of all shapes and sizes - from local butchers to the armed forces, from university R&D departments to blue-chip giants - choose ISS for industry-best products, prices and service. All these businesses have wildly different requirements and priorities: to successfully solve their problems you need a real range of expertise and a serious appreciation of the client industry. This order confirms our position as an established, consummate partner and supplier of choice for governmental bodies as well as the private sector."
The Ministry of Defence (MOD) is the United Kingdom government department responsible for implementation of government defence policy and the headquarters of the British Armed Forces. The principle objective of the MOD is to defend the United Kingdom and its interests. The MOD also manages day to day running of the armed forces, contingency planning and defence procurement. |

ISS and Raytek in Joint Exhibition SuccessMarch 2005: Maintenance professionals flock to exhibition as pre-eminent manufacturer teams up with Yorkshire distributor
Process control specialist Instrumentation Systems & Services appeared this month at the MAINTEC 2005 exhibition at the NEC, Birmingham, alongside Raytek (a Fluke company), the global leader in infrared non-contact temperature measurement.
MAINTEC 2005 is the UK's leading exhibition for the maintenance and asset management industry, with over 150 exhibitors and around 2000 attendees. Raytek and ISS both reported a strong turnout and positive feedback from delegates, with a good number of new contacts made and encouraging prospects for forthcoming applications.
Scott Kelly, ISS Sales Manager, said: "People come to MAINTEC to find ways to solve their maintenance problems. Heat is well-known as an early indicator of machine damage, so Raytek instruments monitor and save the temperatures of equipment in normal operation so that the software can compare the data with subsequent scans and easily and accurately predict when maintenance should be scheduled! It's a simple and successful system that often garners a lot of interest, and this exhibition was no exception."
A frequent winner of Raytek UK Distributor of the Year, ISS has supported Raytek apparatus for the past nine years. Does this contradict ISS' claim to be independent?
"Not at all," says Kelly, "because the only reason we offer Raytek before other similar manufacturers is that Raytek gear represents the best value for money. We don't get better terms from Raytek than we would from other suppliers, we don't have any vested interest or any personal ties. ISS Assists Energy Efficiency at Production PlantFebruary 2005: Instrumentation expert designs bespoke SCADA system as energy efficiency moves up corporate agenda
Following the successful design and implementation of a milk-sampling delivery system last year, Instrumentation Systems & Services has won a second major project at the UK's leading chilled dairy foods company.
ISS, the UK's premier independent outlet of process control instrumentation, is to design and implement an energy monitoring system with one of its systems integrators, monitoring 20 three-phase points around the plant to build up a picture of energy consumption. Then ISS consultants will isolate the machinery that appears to run at an inefficient level and use their experience and expertise to advise the client on how best to remedy the inefficiencies and bring their energy bill down.
Philip Howard, Managing Director of ISS, said: "Like the rest of the industry, since the introduction of the Climate Change Levy in 2001 we've seen an increased interest in energy efficiency. Companies are tolerating less idle running of equipment, and thinking twice about powering equipment down only to need a massive start-up surge a few hours later when they power back up. The role of the energy system we put in place will be to spot these inefficient areas and allow our consultants to advise on how to eliminate or minimise them. We've always borne the client's bottom line in mind so recommending specific cost-cutting techniques shouldn't present us with any problems!"
The system is to consist of various industrial instrumentation, including a large number of watt transducers and current transformers, industrial PCs and Prodigy HMI SCADA software. Delivery is expected in the third quarter 2005.
The client is the UK's most broadly based dairy business, producing many household names including the country's number one dairy spread, mature cheddar, fresh flavoured milk drink and children's chilled dessert. The company also supplies all the leading supermarkets with their retailer own-brand dairy products. The client has been quoted on the LSE for over ten years and is significantly ahead of the FTSE 250 index.

ISS Sweetens Life at ConfectionersJanuary 2005: Foodstuffs factory more efficient as market leader devises control system
Instrumentation Systems & Services, the process control specialist, has been asked to design a total production monitoring system for a major confectionery producer.
The client has six low-temperature ovens, controlled either by thermostat or PLC. The speed at which these ovens heat, dry and cool is critical to product quality as each item has a different optimum rate.
The ISS design will incorporate Prodigy HMI software, Novus temperature and relative humidity transmitters, West 8010 process indicators and West 4400 relay programmers to provide a complete Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition (SCADA) system. The structure will communicate with all the PLCs and temperature sensors and allow the client far greater control over the production processes. Operation and monitoring will become markedly more efficient with the installation of operating terminals on the front panel of each oven, allowing engineers to start and stop batches, enter recipes and examine progress with ease. Delivery is expected in the third quarter 2005.
The £40m turnover client employs 500 people and owns six major brand names.

ISS Wins Major Dairy ContractJuly 2004: System design accepted as instrumentation expert helps streamline and enhance delivery process
Instrumentation Systems & Services announced this month that it has been awarded a contract to design and install a tailored automatic milk-sampling system with one of its systems integrators for the UK's leading chilled dairy foods company.
Selected from a shortlist of several renowned companies, leading SCADA outlet ISS beat off opposition with its proposal for a Prodigy-based system using proximity cards. The redesigned delivery process will be more efficient as well as providing entirely new functions to further enhance product safety and quality.
Philip Howard, Managing Director of ISS, explains: "The sequence of events using the new system will be that upon arriving at the site gatehouse, the truck drivers enter their ID, truck registration, load details and route and receive a swipecard. They proceed into the site, choose any unload point, swipe their card, connect to the milk line and start the unload pump. As the truck unloads, the milk temperature is automatically measured, monitored and recorded, several milk samples are automatically taken (times relative to load size), and all data is finally added to the batch information.
"The Prodigy HMI SCADA software we intend to use will allow date and time logging of the nine key points in the sequence, and report on lists of deliveries each day, or from one particular truck or to one particular unload point, and allow reconciliation between laboratory test results and particular deliveries and samples. We also intend to use standard sensing equipment and instrumentation, numerous PCs, and ensure that all data is tamper-proof, with read-only fields and password protection. It's a unique and highly complex job, but the client was clearly impressed with our proposal and this is a fascinating application for us."
The client is the UK's most broadly based dairy business, producing many household names including the country's number one dairy spread, mature cheddar, fresh flavoured milk drink and children's chilled dessert. The company also supplies all the leading supermarkets with their retailer own-brand dairy products. ISS Drafted In to Help US NavyMay 2004: US Navy gains a new recruit as UK process control specialist is welcomed abroad
With one of its system integrators, Instrumentation Systems & Services announced this month it has won a major contract with the United States Navy. ISS, the UK's leading independent distributor of industrial instrumentation, is to design and implement a system for the US Navy to control temperature and relative humidity in decommissioned ships.
At the termination of a ship's service career she enters the reserve or 'mothball' fleet. The ship is tied up in backwater near a naval base or shipyard, fully equipped for fighting but currently surplus to requirements, and sealed for long-term storage. However, a skeleton crew ensure the ship stays in usable condition, and in this instance will do so by monitoring and controlling the temperature and relative humidity inside the ship. This is important, as explained by Philip Howard, ISS Managing Director.
"As various parts of the ships are sealed, environmental conditions are obviously intensified in closed areas. High temperatures will damage the electronics, high humidity can cause rust, and low temperatures lead to condensation which can trigger both. Control systems are usually already in place from the ships' days in service, but following decommissioning they are all shut down, so the new systems have to be powered from the shore and run independently of the ships' circuits. The system uses Novus dual channel data loggers and West process indicators - hopefully the Navy will be so impressed by the instruments' performance that if the ships are recommissioned we can see ISS products in active service!"
The United States Navy is the branch of the Unites States armed forces responsible for conducting naval operations. It is the world's largest navy with a tonnage greater than that of the next 17 largest combined, and currently numbers nearly 500,000 personnel on active duty or in reserve and operates 281 ships and more than 4000 aircraft. |

ISS Appointed UK Distributor for NovusApril 2004: Negotiations completed as Novus agree to appoint market leader as UK distributor for low-cost high-quality automation products
Novus, the largest Brazilian manufacturer of single loop controllers and data acquisition instrumentation, has moved into its 35th country by choosing Instrumentation Systems & Services as UK distributor.
The respected South American manufacturer recently won the Industrial Distinction award, presented annually to just three outstanding global companies chosen over 5,000 affiliated industries and a distinguished list of previous winners (including American corporations such as Carrier, John Deere and Dana Corporation). Novus also developed the first controller in the world featuring a universal input and output (i.e. accept any sensor and drive any industrial actuator).
Instrumentation Systems & Services is recognised as the UK's premier independent outlet of process control equipment so was a natural partner for the successful manufacturer. Philip Howard, Managing Director of ISS, said: "We are very pleased to be involved with the UK distribution of the Novus range. Brazil, China and India are seen as having the most rapidly developing economies in the world, and the establishment of Brazil as a global power will come as no surprise if companies like Novus are typical of its manufacturing sector! These instruments are unbelievably low cost for the specification, quality and reliability you get. Manufacturers from developing countries are less well-known here than those from developed nations, but the workmanship and price are outstanding so we're sure our clients will be very interested in these products, and hopefully we can bring them to a wider new market audience too."
ISS will begin marketing and selling Novus equipment with immediate effect. |

ISS Wins SCADA Order Worth £1 MillionMarch 2004: Furnace manufacturer takes delivery of first bespoke system as ISS is confirmed as a leader in UK SCADA design
Instrumentation Systems & Services, the process control expert, has this month won a contract worth £1 million over ten years to provide complex and innovative SCADA systems to an international glass-tempering furnace manufacturer.
Selected from a shortlist of several leading suppliers, ISS won the contract with a proposal to employ dependable and cutting-edge equipment (including the Raytek MP50 infrared linescanner, which measures a line of 256 points using a rotating mirror scanning 48 times per second, and the award-winning Prodigy HMI software) to provide a complete Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition (SCADA) system, with an estimated order rate of ten systems each year.
The client, a major manufacturer and supplier of cold-cure resin for laminating glass, routinely exports to 70 countries with tempering furnaces installed throughout Europe, North America, South America, Australasia and Asia. The tempering plants are recognised as the world's most energy efficient flatglass toughening systems and will now be offered with the option of the ISS tailored SCADA system worldwide.
NB: ISS went on to win Raytek Linescanner Application of the Year 2004 at the Raytek International Sales Conference in Berlin for this system

ISS Assess Industry Reaction at Furnaces 2003March 2003: Things heat up as UK leader in industrial instrumentation gives first outing to new ranges
Instrumentation Systems & Services, the process control specialist, this month showcased its new panel PC series and full range of Shinko controllers, indicators and recorders for the first time at the Furnaces 2003 Exhibition and Conference.
Furnaces 2003 is a small event for the thermal processing and heat treatment sectors, and proved to be fertile ground for the independent Yorkshire distributor to gauge market reaction to its new products.
Scott Kelly, ISS Sales Manager, said: "The aim for us at Furnaces 2003 was to test the waters with our newly-designed panel PC range and our Shinko Japan portfolio. Happily, the sales team reported that both generated a high level of interest. The panel PCs complement Prodigy SCADA software perfectly so were always going to be appealing, and people were very impressed with the Shinko range, particularly the 6-point 100mm chart recorder. This was a smaller event than MTEC last month and we were able to take the time to talk to people in more depth and get more incisive feedback - which is what we were there for." |

ISS Impress at MTEC 2003February 2003: Excited response as instrumentation expert attracts attention at major industry event
Instrumentation Systems & Services, the market leader in process control, this month enjoyed a highly successful appearance at the popular MTEC 2003 exhibition at the NEC, Birmingham.
The independent outlet reported that the well-attended event saw high levels of interest across all ISS product ranges and produced nearly 200 serious new industry contacts.
Perpetually popular products by ABB, Eurotherm, Raytek and West proved to be a pull, and ISS also presented new instrumentation such as CommDaq SMS alarm-based monitors, alongside samples of the panel PC and Shinko Japan ranges to be rolled out fully later this year.
MTEC is the only UK show dedicated wholly to sensors, measurement and instrumentation -industries which thrive on technological innovation, making serious exhibitions a must for both users and product developers.
Scott Kelly, ISS Sales Manager, said: "It's easy to become jaded by the standard of some exhibitions at the moment, but MTEC 2003 was thoroughly refreshing. We were approached by hundreds of companies and had a unusually successful stint - maybe it's because we haven't been for a few years, or maybe it's because we had a few new names on our stand - either way, we were able to create a bit of a buzz and hopefully can carry this enthusiasm forward through the year!" |

ISS Appointed Exclusive UK Distributor for ShinkoJanuary 2003: Deal struck as Shinko Japan make process control specialist exclusive distributor in UK
Instrumentation Systems & Services have this month been appointed exclusive distributor for successful and renowned Japanese outfit Shinko, as the Yorkshire-based company establishes itself as the country's top distributor of industrial instrumentation.
Following discussions with the Shinko board in Osaka, Japan, and negotiations at the European headquarters in Drunen, Netherlands, ISS was announced as distributor and will begin offering Shinko equipment with immediate effect.
Philip Howard, Managing Director of ISS, said: "Being chosen as exclusive distributor out of all the outlets in the country is of course a huge compliment, and we're genuinely excited to be involved with the Shinko range. Controllers, indicators and recorders are our bread and butter - many of our engineers have been working with them for decades - and you recognise outstanding instruments when you see them! The thing that will set the Shinko units apart is their cost - you get the build quality of something for double the price with the entire range. They really deserve to take the UK market by storm, and we're determined to make that happen."
